Your Crew Is a Walking Billboard: Making Your Marketing Budget Work Harder

When you run a small business, every dollar has a job to do.

That is especially true when things get tighter. Advertising, equipment, payroll, vehicles, supplies. It all adds up. So when you are deciding where to spend, it makes sense to look for things that can do more than one job.

Your crew's clothing is one of them.

If your employees are already wearing work shirts, hoodies or other apparel on the job, adding your business name and logo turns something you already need into another way for people to recognize your company. Your crew is already out there. At job sites. In parking lots. Stopping for coffee. Picking up supplies. Driving between customers.

They are already being seen.

Local recognition is important

For a local business, marketing isn't always about reaching thousands of strangers., sometimes it is simply about becoming familiar. Someone sees your landscaping crew working down the street. A homeowner notices your company name on a shirt. Later, a neighbour asks who did the work. That kind of recognition matters.

Square's 2026 Local Economy Report found that 40% of Canadian consumers choose a local business based on word-of-mouth recommendations, while 29% said they wouldn't try an unfamiliar business without some prior awareness or reviews.

Branded apparel can't create a good reputation for you. Your work has to do that. But it can make the business doing that good work easier to recognize and remember.

You're probably buying the clothing anyway

This is one of the reasons branded workwear makes sense for many small businesses. Your crew needs something to wear. Instead of treating the shirts as one expense and marketing as another, a properly branded work shirt can do both jobs.

It identifies your employees when they're on a customer's property. It gives the crew a more consistent appearance. And every time the shirt gets worn, your business name goes back out into the community.

Start with how your crew actually works

Before choosing a garment, think about what you're asking it to survive.

Does your crew work outside all summer? Are they working in kitchens, warehouses or customer homes? Do the shirts get washed constantly? Are employees moving, lifting, kneeling and working in the heat? Do you need something lightweight, or something heavier that can take more abuse?

Screen printing or DTF?

The decoration method matters too. For many straightforward business logos and repeat apparel orders, traditional screen printing can provide a durable, consistent result.

For smaller quantities, detailed artwork, gradients or designs with many colours, DTF printing may make more sense.

Neither method is automatically the right answer for every order.

The goal should be to choose the garment and printing method that make sense for your artwork, quantity and how the clothing will actually be used.

Your marketing doesn't have to live in one place

Branded apparel isn't a replacement for your website, Google reviews, social media or digital advertising. It works alongside them. Someone might see your crew working in Scarborough, remember the company name from the shirt, and look you up later. Someone else might receive your name from a neighbour and recognize it because they've seen one of your trucks or employees around the area. Those little points of recognition can reinforce each other.

Square's Toronto data provides an interesting picture of how interconnected local businesses already are. Forty-nine percent of Toronto Square sellers share regular customers with at least one other local business. Local customers move between local businesses. Being recognizable within that community has value.

Make what you're already buying work harder

You don't necessarily need another big marketing campaign. Sometimes the opportunity is much simpler. If you're already putting your crew in shirts, hoodies or workwear, make sure those garments are comfortable enough to wear, appropriate for the job and printed well enough to keep representing your business.

Because your crew is already out there representing your company.

Make sure what they're wearing represents it well.

💡Think it. 👕Print it. 🩷Love it.
